The Joyful Mysteries

The Joyful Mysteries contemplate the Incarnation and the hidden years of Christ's life — the time before his public ministry. They begin with Mary's consent at the Annunciation and lead through the birth, presentation, and early life of Jesus to the Finding in the Temple. They teach that Christian joy begins when God enters human life and is received with faith, humility, and wonder.

The Luminous Mysteries

The Luminous Mysteries contemplate the public ministry of Jesus, from his Baptism in the Jordan to the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. They show Christ revealing the Kingdom of God through his words, signs, transfigured glory, and sacramental presence. These five mysteries were proposed by Saint John Paul II in 2002 to ensure the Rosary's full cycle included the heart of Christ's earthly mission.

The Sorrowful Mysteries

The Sorrowful Mysteries contemplate the Passion and death of Jesus. They lead from his prayer in Gethsemane to the sacrifice of the Cross. They teach repentance, obedience, patient endurance, and gratitude for the price of our redemption.

The Glorious Mysteries

The Glorious Mysteries contemplate Christ's victory over death and the life he has won for the world. They begin with the Resurrection and move through the Ascension and the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost — mysteries not only of heaven, but of the Church's life now — before ending with Mary assumed into heaven and crowned as Queen. They strengthen Christian hope and direct the heart toward the eternal life for which every soul was made.
